Evil Dead Ash

Evil Dead: Sam Raimi’s Best 5 Closeup Shots

From Darkman to Spiderman and beyond to the Evil Dead, horror director Sam Raimi is famous for his gruesome shots. There is already plenty of media out there about Top Sam Raimi Closeups, where you’ll inevitably find shots from Darkman (especially the Pink Elephant scene), Spiderman (especially Willem Defoe) and Evil Dead 2 (especially the laughter scene, which is honestly my favorite).

I saw that as an opportunity to curate a terrifying collection EXCLUSIVELY from Sam Raimi’s ultimate experience in gruelling terror: The Evil Dead (original release,1981). With that in mind, here are my top 5 Evil Dead closeups!

5. Cheryl Williams Lost in the Woods

Cheryl Williams, Ash’s sister, gets attacked by the trees at night and rushes back inside. What a horrifying scene. What’s worse, no one seems to believe her that the trees are alive!

But before she can make it back to the cabin, she has to outrun the thing in the woods, grab a key, and make it fit in the keyhole. Sounds simple right?

Not for Cheryl.

That face (above) is Cheryl PANICKING to get back inside the house before the trees can finish what they started. Yikes.

4. Evil Monster in the Basement Closeup

If you think this belongs in number 1, I don’t begrudge you your opinion. The basement monster a really cool closeup.

It’s iconic. But there are so many amazing shots to choose from, and this just doesn’t make it to my number 1. It can’t. The ones coming up are simply better.

3. 2 of Spades, Jack of Diamonds, Jack of Clubs, BLEAAAAAAAAGH

“Why have you disturbed our sleep? Awakened us from our ancient slumber? You will die like the others before you. One by one we will take you. Uwwuueeeaaauuughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.”

Cheryl Williams

The first time I saw this scene, it scared the SHIT out of me. Everything was just so right about it, from Ellen Sandweiss’ terrifying voice acting, to the detailed makeup, to Sam Raimi’s choice to do a closeup here. It all mixes together perfectly. This closeup is so iconic that I want to give it the number 1 slot.

Let’s be real. Any of these remaining top 3 could all conceivably be number 1.

2. The Evil Dead: Ash is Going Crazy Closeup Shot

This is why Sam Raimi is a genius.

This Sam Raimi closeup shot here moves us from just a gory horror fest to a psychological, wtf am I watching, scary-because-it’s-fucking-insane carnival.

Seriously, this shot is so jarring, it gets you right where you need to be for the next part, where Ash starts mumbling to himself and going crazy. From here on, he’s cracked.

For me, this is one of the things that makes Evil Dead unique in the wide world of horror movies. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like Ash Williams cracking up in The Evil Dead. And if I have, I know it definitely came after 1981.

This shot could have taken the number 1 spot, if not for Sam Raimi’s brilliant final closeup shot.

1. Best Evil Dead Closeup: Sam Raimi’s Ending Scene

This has to be my favorite.

You have the buildup, the scream, Bruce Campbell’s face, and then the end credits: they all gel together to give me goosebumps every single time.

When it comes to Sam Raimi Closeups, you simply can’t do better than the end scream. Seriously, it gets me every time I watch.
