Life abroad isn’t always easy. Mine in particular has been difficult lately. For one thing, I have fallen out of love with my job, a situation in which I had been pulling desperately at increasingly shorter straws in attempt after attempt to console myself: “you’re here for the kids, don’t worry about your boss who hasn’t taught a day in her life” became “this’ll get better if you wait it out,” which became, eventually, “it’s a job, you don’t have to like it, you just have to do it.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you really like your profession, it’s especially hard to work for someone who doesn’t understand the nature of the business that she runs. That’s exacerbated by, shall we call them, Sino-American cultural differences – I’d call it rudeness, but hey, that wouldn’t be fair! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s fair: it’s especially hard for someone like me who doesn’t know how to keep his mouth shut when he’s right. Who can be downright bellicose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here’s the kicker: that’s not even why I’m here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s just preamble. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s the point: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There have been reasons to be upset; however, like people all around the world, one thing that brightens my day is food. So I figured, why not share some of what’s been making me happy lately? 3 ways in which I have consoled myself? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, what follows are 3 snacks I had recently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japanese Snacks!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I’ve been living just outside a Lawson convenience store for a couple of months now, and some of my meals have started to reflect that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have a points rewards system that I should probably figure out how to become a part of…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway, first one up was pretty disgusting, so let’s get that one out of the way! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Teriyaki Burger & Green Tea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ever find yourself in a hurry, with very little money and a desire to harm your body with questionable meat? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

See the price tag on the wrapper? You get what you pay for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The green tea was good, though. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Authentic Street Food: Strawberry Mochi<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Now this was excellent. Red adzuki bean-filled mochi cakes with fresh strawberries stuffed down the middle like a red apple in the mouth of a Hannah-Barbara cartoon porker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These were not only beautiful, but also fresh, sweet, and tart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Actual Coffee Ice Cream<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the realest coffee ice cream I’ve ever eaten. There’s actual crunchy coffee beans inside the outer chocolate shell for you to chew on. And they wake you the hell up. It’s a bitter-sweet combo that I appreciate in food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
